9 Things to Do While Visiting Puerto Rico

Are you due for a getaway and looking for your next vacation destination? Look no further. Visiting Puerto Rico might be just what you need. This year’s long-awaited vacation finally happened and it was everything I wished for. Work has taken so much of our lives that we have not really had the chance to unwind. Visiting Puerto Rico was the perfect getaway and a nice distraction from everyday life for us. This beautiful island was so worth the trip. It’s funny to think that Puerto Rico wasn’t even our first pick. We previously discussed Jamaica, Mexico. And after some back and fourth we picked Puerto Rico at the very last minute. I really had no idea what to expect traveling there. I have a few friends who are Puerto Rican, but only one non-Puerto Rican in my entourage had been to Puerto Rico and she didn’t say much about her…

How To Achieve Beautiful Curls Using Perm Rods

Lately I’ve been trying to figure out different ways I can style my hair and look presentable in public since my SLAP is not quite suitable for all occasions. One thing I didn’t take into consideration when I started this hair journey was how hard it would be to style my hair as I transition. My go to style being relaxed had always been letting my hair down, and the occasional buns. In my quest for finding new hairstyles that I’d be able to rock as I transition,  for the first time ever last weekend, I attempted curling my hair with perm rods. I wanted to curl my hair, so I went digging on youtube and found a tutorial on how to achieve beautiful curls using perm rods. It was time to give it a try. I must tell you though, for a first timer like me, these tutorials look a lot easier than they really…

The Dangers Of Protective Styling

Protective Styling, a natural’s best friend! If you are on a hair journey, whether you’re transitioning or are natural, chances are you’ve had your fair share of protective styling. I am no stranger to protective styling. In fact, I’ve grown to really appreciate them within the past few months. Protective styles have saved my life when I had no idea what to do with my transitioning hair. What is protective styling? Protective styling is when you style your hair in a way that your ends are protected against the elements that can cause tangles and breakage such as your clothes, your cotton pillowcase, your phone etc… (I think you get the picture). Examples of protective styles are weave, wigs, twists, braids. Protective styling is also the best way to protect your hair from over manipulation. When I get tired of dealing with my natural hair, or when I feel like it…

Should I Big Chop or Should I Transition

15 weeks post relaxer, I have no idea what my next course of action will be. I have been thinking a lot about it lately, and I just cannot agree with myself on anything. I knew going on a hair journey would be tough, I just never thought it’d be that hard. I wonder how many of you ladies go/went through this with your hair. Please tell me some of you do. I’d hate to think that I am the only indecisive/confused one out there. Anyways, when I started my hair journey, I had no idea what I was doing, nor  what to expect. I didn’t even know I was on a hair journey. I was the girl looking for answers to her badly damaged hair. After consulting youtube and numerous blogs, I decided the solution to my problem was to stretch my relaxers. As I dug deeper I started convincing myself…

My Love Hate Relationship with the Braids- Protective Style

Braids when done properly are considered great protective styles. You might ask: what is a protective style? Simply put, a protective style is a hair style that protects your hair from being over manipulated. What it means is that it keeps you from constantly having to comb through it and play with it which limits breakage. There are several types of protective style, but one of the most common types I know is braids. Ever since I started this healthy hair journey, I can hardly replicate my go to relaxed hair styles. I’ve been left to figure other ways to look presentable when I step out of my home. I love wearing my SLAP cap, but I certainly can’t wear them every where. So of course “braids” came to mind. But if you know me at all, you know I don’t have the best track records with having my hair braided. You can say that…

Is it Better to Blow Dry or Air Dry your Hair

Blow drying or air drying, which is better? You’re probably reading this because you are overwhelmed with all the confusing information available on the subject. I thought I had it all figured myself until  I started my hair journey. Growing up, I was always taught that water is bad for my hair because it makes it fragile which causes breakage. My mother always made sure that I never kept my hair wet. As soon as I was done washing my hair, or came from the beach, or anything of the kind, I had to quickly blow dry my hair. According to my mother, it would help me keep a head full of healthy  hair. Lately though I’ve been learning that using heat causes damage and water is actually my friend because it helps my hair stay moisturized. That goes against everything I know and here goes confusion. God knows I don’t need more confusion on this hair journey. Blow dry…

Thinking About Going Natural? Think Twice

Have you been thinking about going natural for some time and are weighing in your options still? You might be asking yourself is it the right thing for you to do, or is it a bad idea? Now that the natural hair movement has really taken over the world, going natural seems to be the cool thing to do. Everywhere you go you can’t help but notice black women flaunting their kinks and coils for the world to see. There is definitely a big rise in the number of black women all over the world thinking about going natural and ditching their relaxers. Some of these women have been relaxed all of their adult lives. So that means they most likely have no idea what their natural hair looks like. When it comes to me, I have a slight idea about the natural state of my hair, but I can’t know for sure until I am 100…

Relaxer Stretch or Natural Hair

There comes a time in our lives when we must make certain decisions: what outfit to wear for an interview, the best school for our kids, where to go for vacation etc… Some more important than others. As women, what to do with our hair is one of those important decisions. I am at a crossroad. I am currently debating whether I should end my relaxer stretch and go back to the creamy crack, or just flip the script and go natural. This, believe it or not is one of the biggest decisions of my life. I’ve been relaxing my hair at a very young age, and have been addicted to it ever since. Unfortunately over the years, I have seen my hair slowly deteriorate which is why I decided to slow down on relaxing it. Now I’m at a point where I don’t really know how to handle my hair. What should I do?…

Free from the braids

As you might have guessed, I took out my braids. I just could not deal with the tug-o-war that was happening on my head anymore. I had to free myself from the braids. They only lasted 3 days, but I’m so happy they’re gone. Keeping these braids any longer would’ve caused major damaged to my hair, and that was not the goal at all. Unfortunately, I can see a lil spot where I started losing some hair. It is not much and I’m hoping I can get it fixed pretty soon. I can definitely say, this braiding experience was the worst of them all. See when we do a protective style, the goal is to protect our hair for a certain period of time. Braiding with extension is an example of protective style. Unfortunately for me, this protective style cause more hurt that good. I am not saying I am writing…
